The relentless Victorian and later urbanisation and suburbanisation of North London has left few buildings of note. Among the welcome survivors, Willesden church dates from the 13th century and has a 14th century doorway; while Edmonton Green still retains some quiet character in the area around its church which includes the cottage once inhabited by the much-loved essayist Charles Lamb. Just south, Tottenham retains its church with a 14th century tower and Bruce Castle is an Elizabethan manor house with late 17th century additions. The once extensive royal forest of Enfield Chase only survives in remnants such as Trent Park. Enfield itself still has the feeling of a town and shows how the local timber was well exploited. Gentlemen’s Row comprises fine 18th century cottages. Forty Hall is a notable property of the 1630s with plaster ceilings and screen. The better modern buildings can now be appreciated – such as the impressive range of 1930s London underground stations on the Northern and Piccadilly Lines. |

The top four colour trends in wooden flooring
Trends in wood flooring come and go, but the following three colour trends show no signs of going anywhere anytime soon. Once your floor sanding is complete and it's time to think about staining and varnishing floorboards, these are the finishes that will keep your floors looking on trend for years to come.
The coastal vibe: whitewashing
If you want your newly sanded and finished floorboards to radiate calm and tranquillity, then you'll want to try the whitewashing trend. Whitewashed floors work beautifully with greens and blues in your decor to create a coastal vibe. However, it can be difficult to get this finish absolutely right and you can't use an oil-based polyurethane as this will turn the whitewashed boards yellow. Instead, use a water-based finish and try a hint of grey. Water-based polyurethanes are more expensive but also much more durable, so your whitewashed floor will stay looking better for longer.
The new neutral: grey
Grey is the perfect complement to any interior, making bright and rich colours pop, or providing the perfect foil for other neutrals. Achieving the perfect neutral grey involves mixing whitewash with ebony and, once again, an oil-based lacquer will ruin the look by adding a golden hue. The perfect grey finish doesn't come cheap, thanks to the use of water-based polyurethane, and different species of wood can take up the stain in different ways, so perfection in the initial floor sanding is a prerequisite to making this look work in your home.
Perfect for drama: black
A very dark brown or black stain is the perfect finish if you want some drama in your decor. Opt for ebony for a true black or a rich dark mahogany for something with more warmth. Dark floors can even be custom stained for just the right look. Water popping the floor will help to ensure that the finished result is rich and even to create a truly stylish and elegant look.
The vintage look: authentic retro
This is the low fuss alternative to having your floors stripped back and colour stained. After floor sanding to reveal the natural beauty of your wooden floor, simply oil your floorboards and let them be. Warm, authentic and vintage, these floors revel in their imperfections and have a fabulous retro appeal that suits any interior.
